The Journal of Iranian Dental Association (J Iran Dent Assoc), first established in 1982, has undergone a remarkable evolutionary journey over the past four decades. From its origins as a periodic news bulletin to its current standing as a premier open-access scientific journal indexed in numerous international databases, the publication has consistently adapted to the changing landscape of academic publishing. The following chronology outlines the key milestones, transitions, and achievements that have shaped the Journal's distinguished history.

Establishment and Early Years (1982–1985)

• 1982: The publication was first established as a regularly issued news bulletin, primarily devoted to reporting news and addressing cultural matters relevant to its readership.
• From its inception: It functioned as an organized and continuous periodical publication.
• 1984 – The journal has been published as an open-access publication from this year onward, ensuring that all content is freely available to readers without subscription or payment barriers.
• 1985: Official authorization was obtained from the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance to publish a specialized dental journal.
• 1985: The original news bulletin formally ceased publication in its original format and was replaced by a scientific periodical entitled Majallah-i-Dandanpezeshki (Dental Journal).
• Copyright: From the outset of its scientific publication, copyright has been granted to the authors, who retain full intellectual property rights over their published work.

Official Licensing & Monthly Publication (1986–1993)

• December 1986: The Press Supervisory Board of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance approved the continued publication of the journal under the title Journal of the Islamic Dental Association of Iran (J Islam Dent Assoc Iran; JIDAI).

• Recognition: This publication is recognized as the first Iranian scientific dental journal published in ministerial format.

• September 1993: A formal request was submitted to transfer the publishing license to the Islamic Dental Association of Iran.
• November 15, 1993: The request was examined and duly approved at the meeting of the Press Supervisory Board.
• December 7, 1993: The official publication license was formally registered and issued in Tehran, maintaining the defined religious–scientific–health–social scope, Persian language, and monthly periodicity.

ISSN Registration & Frequency Change (1994–1997)

• 1994: The Journal of the Islamic Dental Association of Iran (J Islam Dent Assoc Iran; JIDAI) was registered with the National Library and Archives of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
• 1994: A print ISSN (1024-6428) was assigned and thereafter printed on the cover of each issue.
• January 1997: Following a written application submitted to the Domestic Press Office of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, the publication frequency was officially changed from monthly to quarterly.

Scientific Ranking & Indexing (1997–2008)

• July 27, 1997: Pursuant to the approval of the National Commission of Medical Journals, the journal was granted the rank of Scientific–Promotional.
• February 2002: At the 42nd session of the National Commission of Medical Science Journals, the journal was elevated to Scientific–Research status.
• Scope: Publication of original research articles, review papers, and case reports across various dental specialties and fields of oral and dental health.
• Principal objective: Advancement of scientific knowledge and dissemination of research achievements within dental sciences.

  Digital Transition and Awards (2008)

   

• 2008: The journal launched its dedicated website (www.jida.ir) and implemented a comprehensive online management system.
• 2008 onward: All editorial processes, from manuscript submission and peer review to final publication, were fully transitioned from manual courier and postal services to an electronic platform.
• Awards: The journal was selected as the top journal for two consecutive years at the 11th and 12th Razi Medical Sciences Research Festivals, receiving the commemorative plaque and emblem of the festival in recognition of its academic merit.
• August 18, 2008: An electronic ISSN (1960-2008) was assigned by the National ISSN Center of the National Library and Archives of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

   

  Bilingual & English-Only Phases (2012–2015)

• Spring 2012: The Dental Journal adopted a bilingual publication model:

• 2015: The journal transitioned to publication exclusively in English language and solely in electronic format.

Transfer & Title Change (2020)

• 2020: The Central Council of the Islamic Dental Association of Iran resolved, with the objective of further growth, academic development, and broader scientific engagement, to transfer publication to the Iranian Dental Association.
• 2020: The journal title was formally changed from:

to Journal of Iranian Dental Association (J Iran Dent Assoc; JIDA)

• New ISSN: The journal has since been published under the ISSN 3060-8201.

Open-Access & Copyright Framework (1984–Present)

• 1984 to present: The journal has been continuously published as an open-access publication, ensuring that all content remains freely accessible to readers worldwide without subscription fees, paywalls, or any other financial barriers.
• Copyright policy: Since its inception as a scientific publication, full copyright has been granted to the authors, who retain exclusive intellectual property rights over their published works, subject only to the terms of the applicable Creative Commons license.
• 1987 to 2025: Throughout this period, all publications of the journal were issued under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 International (CC BY-NC 3.0) license, permitting the sharing and adaptation of content for non-commercial purposes, provided that appropriate attribution was given to the original author(s) and source.
• 2025 (from Issues 1 and 2 onward): The journal transitioned to the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) license, representing an updated version of the license that offers enhanced clarity and international legal compatibility while maintaining the same fundamental non-commercial and attribution-based terms. Authors continue to retain full copyright under this updated license.
